As you all would be aware of the recent ban of plastic in Maharashtra, but we, the people of Maharashtra are still in buzz as to which plastic comes under this ban & carrying, using, distributing can lead us to a fine of :-

1st Time offender :  INR 5000.


2nd time offender :  INR 10000 &


3rd time offender  :  INR 25000 along with a jail term of 3 months.



The Ban Applies To:
The regulations for the ban are applicable to
  • Every person
  • Government and non-government organisation
  • Educational institution
  • Sport complex
  • Clubs
  • Cinema halls and theaters
  • Marriage/celebration halls
  • Industrial units
  • Commercial institutions
  • Offices
  • Pilgrimage organisers, pilgrimages and religious places

The ban is also applicable for hoteliers, dhabas, shopkeepers, malls, vendors or sellers, traders, manufacturers and transporters. Places like market, tourist spots forest and reserved forest, eco-sensitive areas, all sea beaches, all public places, bus stands, railway stations in the State of Maharashtra are included in this ban.

Due to huge oppose from the plastic industry/retailer/trader the Maharashtra Government has recently exempted the ban from the following plastic product:-


1) Plastic bags used by retailer/trader for carrying food grains/household usage/groceries material which is equal to or above 50 micron & has minimum weight of 2 grams exempted.

2)Office/Educational stationary usage plastic material which are made from recyclable material are exempted.


3) Tarpaulin sheet/raincoat and all the plastic material used for agricultural usage are exempted.


4) All the plastic water bottle/cans/wrappers/buckets & all relevant plastic product which are used in household work are exempted.


5) All the cartons having single layer of plastic are exempted.


6) All the plastic used in the packaging work having thickness above 50 micron are exempted.

Which alternate to be used in place of these banned plastic products:-


Every individual/consumer/retailer/trader & all the people who are under this question, the solution is to use the "BIO PLASTIC".


Nearly all the products which are made from bio plastics are bio degradable with a time frame of 3 -6 months they get fully degraded in the environment.




They are usually made from resources derived from following:-

  • Vegetable Oils
  • Vegetable Fats
  • Corn Starch
  • Microbiota
  • Agricultural By-Products (using micro-organism)
  • Plastic Bottles (using micro-organisms)
  • Plastic Containers (using micro-organisms)

Different types biomass sources give different types of Bio Plastics such as :
  • Bio-based Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) - Made from Sugarcane Feedstock
  • Bio-based Polyethylene (PE) - Made from Sugarcane Feedstock
  • Bio-based Polycarbonate (PC) - Made from Corn Feedstock
  • Bio-based Polyamide (PA 4, 10/PA 6,10) - Made from Caster Oil Feedstock
  • Bio-based Polyurethane (PUR) - Made from Feedstock of Corn, Sugarcane, Tapioca 
  • Bio-based Polyamide (PA 11) - Derived from Natural Oil
  • Bio-based Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) - Made by fermentation of Sugar or Lipids
  • Bio-based Poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) - Derived from corn starch, glucose or waste-water
  • Bio-based Polyactic acid (PLA) - Derived from Corn or Dextrose
The current application of these bio-based polymers or bioplastics are limited. They are currently use for making:
  1. Disposable Items
    • Carry Bags.
    • Trays.
    • Fruits & Vegetable Containers.
    • Egg Cartons.
    • Packaging Materials (for food).
    • Bottles (for soft drinks & dairy products).
